Popov Bass

We create buildings that are inscribed in the history of the built environment of Sydney and beyond.

Established in 2007

PopovBass Architects is an Australian architectural firm well-known for their innovative, modern designs that beautifully weave together natural light, the landscape, and quality materials. Their projects often showcase striking sculptural concrete forms and thoughtful spatial planning, deliberately creating seamless indoor-outdoor connections. The firm specialises in residential buildings and apartments, focusing heavily on site-responsive architecture that respects the surrounding environmental context, particularly challenging coastal conditions and steep sites. Their portfolio is packed with bespoke homes and apartment blocks distinguished by their use of concrete planes, brickwork, metal cladding, and ceramic tiles, all expertly crafted to enhance natural light penetration and visual appeal. They also take on renovation projects to modernise older residences for comfortable contemporary living.

About the Owner

Alex Popov (Founder and Director) Role: Founder of the original practice, Alex Popov Architects, established in 1983. Background: Graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1971. Before returning to Australia, he worked in Europe for celebrated Danish architects, including Henning Larsen and Jørn Utzon (designer of the Sydney Opera House). Design Philosophy: His work is known for its "Late 20th Century Modern style" and "abstract monumentality," often using robust, solid forms—particularly formed concrete—to firmly anchor buildings into the landscape. He famously states, "Architecture is taking possession of the earth." Recognition: A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and recipient of numerous major awards, including the Wilkinson Award and Robin Boyd Award.
