Based in East Brunswick and Coburg, Cathy Dowden – Alexander Technique Teacher – offers lessons and workshops that help people manage stress, reduce pain and perform at their best. The Alexander Technique is a mindful, evidence-based approach to improving posture, coordination and presence. Cathy works with professionals seeking relief from anxiety and chronic tension, and with musicians wanting greater freedom, expression and confidence. She holds an Advanced Diploma of Alexander Technique Teaching (School of F.M. Alexander Studies, Melbourne) and draws on her previous career in social work to create a supportive, practical learning environment.
Before becoming an Alexander Technique teacher, I spent many years in social work and university education — and experienced first-hand how stress, overload and tension can take a toll, both physically and emotionally. By my mid-forties, I was showing signs of premature ageing and feeling constantly under pressure. When I discovered the Alexander Technique, I found a way to change that pattern from the inside out. Learning to move with awareness and ease transformed how I felt and how I looked — I’m often told I seem younger at 55 than I did at 45. That change inspired me to retrain full-time for three years at the School of F.M. Alexander Studies, earning my Advanced Diploma in 2018. Now, teaching the Alexander Technique brings together everything I value — curiosity, compassion and a belief in people’s capacity to change. I love helping clients discover how simple shifts in awareness can bring lasting relief from stress and pain, and open the door to a calmer, more confident way of living.
